I’ve never truly noticed it until now – I’m actually pretty plain. Don’t get the wrong idea; I probably wouldn’t choose the excitement of sitting and breathing over anything approaching fun (although let’s not bash a good sit or breath). Just that I might have simple tastes, that become self evident when I take a look around.

Okay, first thing’s first. I’m looking at my mac’s screen and I’m noticing that everything is in a monochrome world view bathed in dark and dull greys and browns. All the colorful icons of the dock are hidden because they distract me. Except for the clutter of the desktop, things are pretty subdued and minimal.

Let’s move to the real world. My tastes there aren’t really that much different. Cars? I’ve driven Lexus’, Mercedes’, whatever but the kinds of cars I inevitably prefer are those that make themselves very transparent to use. Not so much in the lexus style of things that include everything from GPS to ‘a sophisticated electronic suspension that absolutely glides over obstacles like potholes and the homeless.’ That’s part of why I so love motorcycles (in good weather of course). On a bike you feel everything engaging, every swift click of the gears shifting, every rumble and blast of the engine. The experience is much more symbiosis than slave and master.

Cameras? Same deal. As you might’ve guessed from the last post. I do quite a bit of shooting these days using my old as hell Olympus. Not because I think film is magical or that digital is inferior – I don’t, actually the digital format easily trumps film. The problem is in the cameras. I’ve tried out most of them, and each one just doesn’t feel right – probably it’s the many useless buttons that do useless things (like Canon’s Direct Print idiocy), the many scene modes I’m never going to need or use, or the crappy viewfinders and large body size in SLRs today.

People (Cara + haters) tease me about my phone a lot. It’s like 4 years old, doesn’t have color and can only use patterns of BeePs and BoPs for a ringtone. But I love it. There’s not a phone in the world I’d rather have. Sure it would be cool to sometimes have a fancy camera, it’d be nice to have a game other than one player pong (worse than it sounds.. much worse), and it’d be crazy pimp to have the Tetris theme as a ringtone. But my old ass motorola V70 has such a unique and great design and easy to use interface that I couldn’t really part with it. It does all that I need and looks cool too.

I could go on and on, but frankly I’m boring myself. My simple point is that some people love bright colors and rainbow punchyness. Others like just the right mix for them and couldn’t care too much about it. As for me, I like minimal and I’ll choose to be proud of my boring ways. Not necessarily old, and not necessarily bland – just things that feel simple, raw and real. Oh and Tetris. Let’s rock out to Tetris!
